GS1 Company Prefix Guide: What It Is, Lengths & Verification

A GS1 Company Prefix (GCP) is a globally unique sequence of 6 to 11 digits licensed to a brand or manufacturer by GS1. It serves as the legal digital footprint embedded inside every UPC, EAN, and GTIN barcode that company produces, ensuring that no other company in the world shares the same product identification numbers.

How Prefix Length Dictates Barcode Capacity

When licensing a company prefix from GS1 (such as GS1 US or GS1 UK), you must choose the length of your prefix based on how many unique products (SKUs, variations, sizes, colors) you intend to release.

Because retail barcodes have a fixed length (e.g. 12 digits for UPC-A, 13 digits for EAN-13, and 14 digits for GTIN-14), a shorter prefix leaves more digits available for item references:

Prefix Length Item Reference Digits Max Barcode Capacity (SKUs) Typical Business Size
6 digits 5 digits 100,000 products Large multinational corporations, apparel conglomerates
7 digits 4 digits 10,000 products Medium-to-large manufacturers, supermarket suppliers
8 digits 3 digits 1,000 products Growing brands, specialized electronics, food brands
9 digits 2 digits 100 products Small businesses, direct-to-consumer DTC brands
10 digits 1 digit 10 products Boutique artisans, single-line startups
Single GTIN 0 digits 1 product Individual item license (no prefix capacity)

Why Amazon and Major Retailers Verify Company Prefixes

In the past, many third-party ecommerce sellers purchased cheap recycled barcodes from online reseller brokers. However, major marketplaces like Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Google Shopping enforce strict barcode authenticity policies:

Amazon's Official Barcode Policy:

"We verify the authenticity of product UPCs by checking the GS1 database. UPCs that do not match the information provided by GS1 will be considered invalid. We recommend obtaining your UPCs directly from GS1 (and not from other third parties selling UPC licenses) to ensure the appropriate information is reflected in the GS1 database."

When you submit a new product listing in Amazon Seller Central with a UPC or EAN:

  1. Amazon extracts the Company Prefix from your barcode digits.
  2. It sends an API query to the GS1 GEPIR (Global Electronic Party Information Register) database.
  3. If the legal company registered to that prefix does not match your Amazon Brand Registry account or business entity name, your listing is blocked with Error 5461 or Error 8572.

How to Look Up a GS1 Company Prefix

You can look up any company's official prefix or check whether a barcode is authentic using the following methods:

  • GS1 GEPIR Search: Visit gepir.gs1.org and select "Search by Barcode" or "Search by Company Name".
  • Verified by GS1: The modern GS1 portal enables retailers and marketplaces to view the complete product description, brand name, and company license in real time.
  • Internal Reverse Lookup: Try our GTIN Lookup Tool to identify commercial product details from any barcode number.
